4 Best Pressure Washer Accessories for Beginners | Quick & Efficient Cleaning

Intro

In this article, I’ll introduce you to three essential pieces of equipment that can make your pressure-washing business run more smoothly and efficiently. As a beginner, you’re probably searching for tools that not only simplify your tasks but also help you save valuable time. We’ll explore these key accessories, the Leaf Blower, Quick Release Connections, and the X-Jet/Pro-Foamer—each of which can greatly reduce the time you spend on each job.

These tools aren’t just nice-to-haves—they are affordable game changers that can revolutionise your pressure washing routine. By incorporating them into your workflow, you’ll be able to complete jobs more quickly and efficiently. Let’s explore how each of these accessories can help you streamline your operations and boost your productivity.

Underneath each section I have added a link to the exact items I have mentioned in this post.

1. Leaf Blower: Pre-Cleaning Made Easy

What is a Leaf Blower Generally used for?

A leaf blower is typically associated with clearing leaves and debris from lawns and driveways, but its utility in pressure washing is often underestimated. In pressure washing, a leaf blower is highly effective for removing loose dirt, leaves, and other debris from surfaces before you begin washing.

Why It Saves Time

While a leaf blower is commonly used for these tasks, its value extends beyond just pre-cleaning. It’s particularly useful when re-sanding driveways. Re-sanding can be a physically demanding job, often involving a lot of bending and sweeping. Using a leaf blower to clear excess surface sand from block paving is not only a great way to save time but also helps prevent unnecessary strain on your back. This makes it an indispensable tool for those looking to make their pressure washing routine more efficient and less labour-intensive.

2.Ball Valve: Control and Convenience at Your Fingertips

What is a Ball Valve?

A ball valve is a simple yet powerful tool that gives you immediate control over the flow of water in your pressure washing setup. I have mine installed on the end of my high pressure hose or before your pressure washer’s trigger gun, this allows me to start or stop the flow of water with a quick twist of the handle.

Why It Saves Time

The primary benefit of a ball valve is the convenience it offers by allowing you to control the water flow without having to walk back to the machine and turn it off before changing Nozzles.

How It Enhances Workflow

Using a ball valve can significantly speed things up. For instance, when you need to switch from a Turbo nozzle to a low-pressure one or the X-Jet we talk about later, you can quickly shut off the water, make the change, and resume work without having to turn off the machine. This not only saves time but also minimises wear and tear on your equipment by reducing unnecessary pressure cycles.

2. M22 Quick Release Connections

What are Quick Release Connections?

Quick release connections are a simple yet highly effective accessory that allows you to easily and quickly connect and disconnect hoses, nozzles, and other attachments from your pressure washer. Basically, these connections typically involve a snap or twist mechanism that secures attachments without the need for tools or screwing attachments on or off.

Why They Save Time

Along with the ball valve, you’ll need some quick release connections. These allow you to swap nozzles or lances without turning off the pressure washer. Both the ball valve and quick release connections are essential.

One of the most inconvenient parts of pressure washing is changing nozzles or switching between hoses and attachments when these aren’t in place. Quick release connections remove the need for spanners or pliers, letting you make changes in seconds instead of minutes. This speeds up your workflow and reduces downtime between tasks, knocking valuable time off each job.

How to Choose and Use Them

When selecting quick release connections, opt for durable materials such as brass or stainless steel, as these can withstand high pressure and frequent use. You can usually find this information in the product description. It’s also important to make sure the connections are compatible with your existing equipment. M22 quick release connections are commonly used for industrial-grade machines, but always double-check before purchasing.

To use them effectively, take the time to familiarise yourself with the locking and unlocking mechanisms so you can swap out accessories quickly and confidently.

3. X-Jet: Efficient Chemical Application

What is an X-Jet?

The X-Jet is a specialised nozzle that allows you to apply chemicals or detergents directly onto surfaces without passing them through your pressure washer’s pump. This is especially useful for areas that need chemical treatment before the final wash, such as heavily soiled driveways. By bypassing the pump, the X-Jet can help prolong its lifespan, thanks to its built-in chemical delivery system. This feature alone makes it a valuable tool worth considering.

Why It Saves Time

The X-Jet significantly speeds up the chemical application process. When I first started, I would mix water and Hypo in a watering can, using a drill and mixing paddle to stir it. While this worked for the first few jobs, it took nearly ten times longer compared to using the X-Jet. Traditional methods involve mixing chemicals in a separate container, applying them with a sprayer or watering can, and then switching to your pressure washer to rinse.

However, the watering can method shouldn’t be completely dismissed. I still use it when applying chemicals near or under vegetation around patios and driveways, where more precision is needed to avoid harming plants.

The X-Jet streamlines this process by allowing you to apply and rinse without needing to switch between tools or handle chemicals directly. This not only makes the process faster but also reduces the risk of equipment damage, as the chemicals never go through your pump.

Using the X-Jet Effectively

To use the X-Jet correctly, make sure your chemical mix is properly diluted. Your X-Jet setup will come with a dilution chart and plastic valves that help you achieve the right dilution rate, depending on the chemicals you’re applying.

The X-Jet attaches to your pressure washer like any other lance or attachment. When buying, you can choose from options like M22 screw, M22 quick release, or KEW connections, depending on your system. If you’ve set up your equipment with a ball valve and quick release connections, the M22 quick release option will be the most suitable.

Once the X-Jet is attached, start applying the solution from a distance, moving closer as needed to cover the whole area. For the best results, allow the chemicals to sit for a recommended amount of time before rinsing them off with your pressure washer. You can also use the X-Jet for general washing if necessary.

X-Jet Cons

Although the X-Jet is a great time-saver, it does come with a few drawbacks. My biggest issue with the X-Jet is the overspray. Since it’s powered by your pressure washer, it sprays chemicals with a lot of force. While this is perfect for covering large areas with few obstacles, it can be less practical in narrower spaces, especially where plants or other vegetation are present. In these cases, the spray can lack precision. Over time, you’ll get the hang of it, but I recommend being cautious when using an X-Jet in confined spaces where chemicals might land on areas you want to protect.

What’s the Alternative?

Pro-Foamer

At first, I considered buying a Pro-Foamer from Rutland Pumps, as it’s said to offer more precision and a slower, more controlled chemical application. However, they were out of stock when I needed one, and with jobs coming up, I didn’t want to struggle with the watering can method. So, I went with the X-Jet instead. Looking back, I wish I’d waited for the Pro-Foamer, as others in the Facebook community have confirmed it’s better suited for driveway and patio applications, so keep this in mind as an alternative.
